As an integrative medicine practitioner I consider it my job to keep on top of the latest health trends, and if appropriate, give them a try. Which is why I have broken my no coffee rule for this weeks recipe. And I have to admit, I am enjoying it! I was an avid coffee drinker for many years and gave it up for a number of health related reasons. So I was reluctant to try this bulletproof coffee method, and even a little skeptical. Bulletproof coffee involves adding grass fed butter (preferably raw) and MCT oil to your coffee. I know it sounds strange, but it actually tastes great. The butter and MCT oil actually have a lot of properties that nourish gut and brain health. This combination also lowers the acidity level of the coffee. Is it for everyone? No. If you tend to be more acidic, this drink is not for you. If you are suffering from adrenal fatigue, stay away from caffeine. However, if your PH and adrenals are stable you may benefit from adding in a cup of bulletproof coffee a few days out of the week.
  • Organic Coffee
  • 1 tbsp of grass fed butter (raw butter if you can get it)
  • 1 tsp - 1 tbsp of MCT Oil
  1. Brew coffee and add to a blender with butter and oil, process until smooth.
Coffee by itself isn't the healthiest thing for you as I've mentioned in previous posts. It's loaded with 47 different types of acid and can do a number on your adrenals. However, when combined with the right ingredients coffee can do wonders for your brain health. The grass fed butter buffers the acidity level of the coffee while enhancing the effect it has on your mind. And contrary to popular belief, butter is good for you! It contains Vitamin A, E, K, and D as well as lauric acid which can help fight infections such as Candida. It also is the best source for Butyrate which is a really important short chain fatty acid that is essential for your digestive health. Butyrate not only helps to form and strengthen the lining of the gut (i.e. prevent leaky gut) but also promotes the use of stored fat in the body to be used as fuel. In other words butter can actually help you lose fat! If you are able to get raw unpasteurized butter the health benefits will only be enhanced.

MCT Oil is like Coconut oil on steroids! It is easier to digest and breakdown in the body. When coupled with the coffee it helps you sustain the caffeine high throughout the day while avoiding the typical afternoon crash. MCT oil helps maintain healthy levels of cholesterol in the body promotes weight loss as well.

These three ingredients combined packs one pretty powerful punch!
