Cucumber Cooler

Cucumber Cooler

While the rest of the country seems to be cooling off a bit preparing for fall, Florida is still hot as ever. We are holding steady at 90 degrees and about 100% humidity. After doing some work in my garden this past weekend I got way overheated. I was pouring down sweat and my face was bright red. My body needed a little internal cooling. I quickly whipped up this juice which is not only delicious and refreshing, but contains ingredients that cool you off from the inside out.

Notes
The reason this drink is so cooling is due to the nutritional and therapeutic properties of the Cucumber.

Cucumber is what I consider to be a 5 Star vegetable. It is one of the most alkalizing foods you can eat, and the most hydrating. Cucumbers have a high silica content making it great for the skin, which is why they are often used in facials and lotions. Because of its cooling nature it acts as an anti-inflammatory both externally and internally. In fact Cucumbers can treat everything from a bad sunburn to a stomach ulcer. In Chinese medicine it is used to treat excess heat in the body and is especially useful in cooling you off during the summer months.

I love the combination of the Papaya with the cucumber. Papaya's aren't overly sweet and give this drink a more tropical feel. And as an added benefit Papayas are a great source of Vitamin C and promote digestive health.

Not only are Limes really good for you, but they also enhance the flavor of a variety of foods. I tend to add a little lime juice to practically everything I eat. Despite its acidic taste Limes are actually extremely alkalizing in the body. They are also a great source of Vitamin C, in addition to containing antibacterial and anti-microbial agents. And their sour and sweet taste happened to be the perfect compliment to this refreshing juice.

So if you are still feeling the summer heat, get out your juicer and treat yourself to this cooling drink.

And for a little extra decadence, serve it in a martini class. It makes the drink that much cooler : )
