Power Up Superfood Smoothie

Power Up Superfood Smoothie
The dreaded afternoon slump, it happens to the best of us. If you are looking for a healthier alternative to that mid-afternoon espresso pick me up, this smoothie will do the trick. I was having one of those days where I was just dragging. The kind where you just want to stay in bed all day. But having had quite a bit of work to do, lounging wasn't an option. So instead I decide to throw every superfood I had in the kitchen into this smoothie and see if it would wake me up. It did. In fact it did so much that I was able to turbo charge through my to-do list and take on additional tasks that I hadn't planned for. So if you are looking for a pick me up, this is it.

I know it's a lot of ingredients. But these are all great superfoods to have on hand to add into smoothies or other recipes. The base of this smoothie comes from the Acai Berry which is considered by some to be the ultimate antioxidant, and for good reason. Its properties play an important role in heart health, aids in weight loss, improves immune functions, and even helps fight leukemia cells. Acai is known for its anti-aging qualities as well, and has been used in studies to help prevent Alzheimer’s. It is also one of the only antioxidants that is known to enhance sexual performance (considered to be the Viagra of the Amazon).

Another libido enhancing ingredient in this smoothie is Maca powder. Which also helps revitalize and support the adrenals.

Goji Berries are one of my daily staples. They are actually considered to be an herb in Chinese Medicine called Gou Qi Zi. Medicinally they are consumed to nourish blood, enhance eye site, and increase longevity. In Western Medicine Goji Berries are known for their high Antioxidant content. This is attributed to its known benefit for enhancing heart health and preventing cancer. Antioxidants also help to fight off free radicals in the body which is why Goji Berries are considered to have Anti-aging properties. They also enhance brain health and are used to help treat Alzheimer’s as well.

Raw Cacao (raw chocolate) is another awesome superfood. Also high in Antioxidants and Vitamins, Raw Cacao promotes heart health, contains anti-aging properties, and detoxifies. Its major claim to fame is that Raw Cacao helps to regulate neurotransmitters and alter brain chemistry. It releases feel good hormones and helps you to feel more alert and awake. This makes it wonderful for treating depression and fatigue.

Chia Seeds were a staple food for the Aztecs and Mayans. They consumed these seeds for increased energy and stamina. In fact Chia means “strength.” One thing that makes Chia Seeds such a super star is its high fiber content. One serving of Chia Seeds supplies 42% of your daily fiber requirement. And in addition to being packed full of antioxidants they are an excellent source of your Omega 3 Fatty Acids. If you have heart issues, digestive issues, low energy and fatigue, or are looking to lose weight, you’ll want to include Chia Seeds in your diet.

Bee Pollen is another great add in to give you a boost of energy due to its high content of amino acids and B vitamins. I actually use this on a daily basis to help combat seasonal allergies.

Raw Honey is used as a sweetener in this smoothie, but it also comes with a lot of added health benefits. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral! Raw honey boosts the immune system, treats a variety of digestive disorders, and helps to neutralize free radicals in the body. And believe it or not this is just a few of its laundry list of health benefits.

Wheatgrass Powder is another staple in my kitchen. You can buy this separately or get a green powder mix that includes a variety of different greens. Powdered greens are a power house of nutrition containing vitamins, minerals, live enzymes, amino acids, and antioxidants. They are also extremely alkalizing and help to purify and detoxify the body. If someone wanted to do one thing to dramatically benefit their health I would tell them to drink a glass of powdered greens every day.

With all these ingredients was it no wonder that I was feeling so good? Keep these super foods in stock and the next time you are feeling that afternoon slump you'll know what to do.
